Five vie for open seats on BOE

With three open seats on the Haddonfield Board of Education this election season, members of the community have thrown their hats in the ring.

Starting with eight candidates, the number has since declined, with one candidate officially dropping out and another two unofficially leaving the race.

The names that appear on a sample ballot provided by Camden County Deputy Clerk John Schmidt are Mary Fagan, Matthew Jeremy Bass, David Siedell, Kenneth Kouba, Amy Keys Shaw, Lisa Hurly and Carlton Chin.

Originally filing for a spot on the ballot was Kathryn Casey Glazer, but Schmidt said her name was dropped when the county clerk’s office received her withdrawal letter on Aug. 15.

Schmidt said another candidate attempted to submit their withdrawal, but could not do so, since the deadline had already lapsed.

“It was all verbal,” Schmidt said.

On Oct. 7, Hurly posted on her Facebook page that she was pulling out of the race.

“I appreciate all the support I had and it was a really hard decision, but for personal reasons I can’t make the commitment right now to do the job that is needed, and I don’t want to take a job I can’t do properly,” Hurly wrote.

Hurly later confirmed that she was the person who had contacted the Camden County Board of Elections in an attempt to remove her name from the ballot.

In addition, Kouba has confirmed that he is no longer actively running for a seat, even though his name also remains on the ballot after missing the deadline to repeal candidacy.

“September just flew by,” Kouba said.

Fagan, Siedell, Bass, Shaw and Chin have all confirmed that they are still actively running.

The Board of Education Candidate Forum was held on Oct. 21 at Haddonfield Memorial High School and hosted by the Zone PTA with moderation by the League of Women Voters.

All five active candidates engaged in a debate composed of answering questions from the audience.

The forum can be viewed in its entirety by visiting the Haddonfield Civic Association’s website at http://haddonfieldcivic.com.
