A white Lexus SUV with handicapped plates backed into the front doors of the TJ Maxx store in Marlton Crossing just after 2 p.m. today.
The driver was transported to the hospital via ambulance for treatment. Mark Westcott, deputy fire chief, said one shopper was evaluated for injuries, but all other shoppers refused treatment.
Shoppers were evacuated from the building through a back door.
“Everybody was in the store and a lady was pulling out of a parking spot and she backed into the building,” shopper Amanda Boeckle said. “It was loud, it sounded like something hit the building incredibly hard, which obviously is what happened.”
“I could have been dead,” Kathy Guthier, a Marlton resident, said. “It was like a bomb went off. I turned around and saw her in the doorway. I had been in the store, and I was leaving. I got from the doorway just across the street when she went through the doorway.”
Westcott praised the Evesham police for their rapid response time to the incident.
“There were several police officers here before we got here,” Westcott said. “Within two minutes tops we had the first two companies here and then the chief officer.”
Firefighters used a tow chain attached to a firetruck to pull the SUV from the building’s facade. Details on whether the store will close for repairs were unavailable.
