After 30 years of service, Haddonfield Police Chief John Banning is hanging up his hat and badge at the end of the month.
“I worked for a good group of people,” Banning said at the July 16 commissioners meeting where his retirement was announced. “I appreciate the opportunity to serve [Haddonfield].”
Mayor Jeff Kasko, along with commissioners Neal Rochford and John Moscatelli, thanked Banning for his service to Haddonfield.
“He kept the department professional,” Rochford said.
Before slowly making his way up the rankings, Banning served as an officer in Wildwood for less than a year.
He said he heard about an opening in Haddonfield from a fellow academy member.
In 1983, he started out as a patrolman and spent the last four years of his career as chief.
“As times went on, I moved up in the rankings from lieutenant, captain and finally chief. I enjoyed being on the street most of all,” he said.
His most memorable moment was when he saved someone’s life performing CPR.
“It was the first time I ever saved a life using CPR,” he said.
He said he had the opportunity to see his career in the department from start to finish.
Banning said the best part about his job was “the people I have met over the years,” including the people in town and commissioners.
