Camden County inventorying traffic signs on county roads

The Camden County Department of Public Works is in the process of inventorying traffic signs on county roadways. The county has contracted with Maser consulting to perform the Traffic Sign Inventory, which is being done in two phases.

“I consider the maintenance of our county roadways to be a top priority of the Freeholder Board, and that includes improving the placement and readability of our traffic signs,” said Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the Camden County Department of Public Works. “Residents and motorists may see this inventory being conducted in their neighborhoods or during their commutes.”

During the first phase of the project, the consultant is driving a van called a Mobile Asset Collection (MAC) vehicle on every County route. The MAC is equipped with cameras and GPS units that capture roadway images and data. This process may require driving a road several times to collect the required data and should be completed by the middle of July.

The second phase of the project will start in mid-July and should continue into mid-August. During this phase, the consultant will revisit each traffic sign at night to measure its capacity to reflect light. This is done by using a reflectometer aimed at the sign and will also be done at night. Residents should not be alarmed if they see this work being done at night.

“The Camden County Department of Public Works is responsible for maintaining over 400 center line miles of county roadway and 50 bridges,” Leonard said. “Ensuring we have the proper, up-to-date, signage may seem mundane to residents, but it is vitally important for the safety of drivers and pedestrians on our streets.”
