Medford accepting registrations for “Sports for Special Athletes” program

The Medford Township Department of Recreation is currently accepting registrations for the “Sports for Special Athletes” program.

This program is designed to provide children with special needs an opportunity to play sports in an informal, fun environment, tailored to their needs and abilities. This winter, boys and girls ages 5 to 14 will play basketball.

All games will be played at Kirby’s Mill Elementary School gymnasium located at 151 Hartford Road in Medford.

This six-week program takes place on Monday evenings from 6:15 to 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 23. The cost of the program is $25 per person. Each participant will receive a T-shirt as part of registration.

Whether your child has physical, intellectual and/or emotional disabilities, this program will allow them to experience the sense of community intrinsic to participating in youth sports.

In addition, if participating in a team sport is important to your child but they are lacking the skills and confidence to join a team, this program will provide your child the opportunity to work on skills and gain self-assurance.

A buddy system has been established with both youth and adult volunteers to assist children and to give one-on-one instruction as needed.

As much as possible, each participant will be paired with their own buddy.

To register for Sports for Special Athletes, visit the recreation department website at www.MedfordRec.com.

For more information or to volunteer to be a buddy, contact Jo Kuchera, program director, by calling (609) 654–2512, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
