Cherry Hill West and East football teams collecting food

A campaign to benefit the Cherry Hill Food Pantry and residents of the community kicks off Monday, Nov. 14.

The food drive, led by the Cherry Hill West and East football teams, will conclude at this year’s homecoming football match-up between the two schools on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. The game will be held at West’s Jonas C. Morris Stadium.

Despite the long football rivalry, and tradition started 43 years ago, both football teams recognize the need for unity and teamwork to help their entire community. Last year, the food drive yielded a half-filled ShopRite truck of food donations.

This year, the goal is aggressive — to fill the entire food truck — as the needs of local families are increasingly demanding in these tough economic times.

According to Mike Doyle of the Cherry Hill Food Pantry, “At the end of game, no matter what the score, the entire Cherry Hill community wins due to the football teams’ efforts with this food drive.”

In order for the high school teams to reach their goal, each football player will distribute grocery bags with notes to family, friends and neighbors for them to fill with non-perishable food items.

Players will also help spread awareness about the food drive by utilizing the Facebook event, which can be found here.

The community is also invited to donate food items during the homecoming game at West’s South parking lot.

Food Pantry volunteers, the donated truck and driver from ShopRite Supermarkets of Cherry Hill, Inc. will be available to collect and transport the donations.

Stop by for the annual tradition and to help the football teams reach this year’s Food Drive goal, so Cherry Hill wins.
