As we approach the Nov. 8 election for Medford Township Council, I’ve noticed an independent candidate running — George Youngkin. I don’t know Mr. Youngkin personally but I’ve heard he’s a decent individual. I began my due diligence to form an educated decision, making assessments comparing the candidates on a few levels: their history, ability, and activity. I’ve seen the Medford First candidates over the past years questioning our current council members, therefore, I’m familiar with their ability to research, question and take action.
In review of the council meeting minutes on Medford’s website for this year, George Youngkin has never addressed any questions or concerns to the current council. Additionally, he has not made any public record requests (OPRA) over the past two years (according to the Medford Township Clerk’s Office). Should I interpret this as he concurs with council’s past and present course for our community?
I decided to review Mr. Youngkin’s website and accompanying video, I am unable to discern any type of concrete plan or direction to address the numerous challenges our town currently faces. He simply states that he is against the Medford Crossings project and that we need to revitalize our Main Street. Budget deficits, audits indicating $2 million dollars missing in fixed assets, exorbitant water/sewer rates, solar project concerns, loss of municipal services, excessive municipal expenditures and much more doesn’t seem to be a priority to this candidate.
If you’ve not had the time to attend our council meetings, there are three candidates, who won April’s primary, known as the Medford First Team — Randy Pace, Chris Buoni, and Frank Czekay. They have delved into the inner workings of the township for years and continue to attend our town council meetings, addressing key community concerns and seek answers to the tough questions; often accessing the township’s public records. Their website provides a solid, detailed written plan to restore fiscal sanity. We need an advocate for the people, “residents acting on behalf of residents” who have worked tirelessly for many years to impact the status quo, working diligently to identify solutions. They care about our town and have done their homework. Many in our community wouldn’t be aware of the dire situation our town is facing, if not for their efforts. Our town council needs to have dedicated, knowledgeable individuals to make a difference, not someone who is seeking an “apprenticeship position.”
In closing, I won’t vote for just anyone to manage our largest asset without the full skill set necessary to succeed. There seems to be only one choice, Pace, Buoni, and Czekay — The Medford First Team.
