From New York City to D.C. on a bike

Five members of the Evesham Township Police Department hopped on their bikes at Ground Zero Monday in New York City and found themselves in Wilmington, Del. yesterday as they continue to participate in the Police Unity Tour to honor fallen police officers.

The five officers are participating in the ride down the east coast to honor all of their fellow officers who have died in the line of duty. Also, the ride serves as a fund-raiser to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial and Museum.

The riders were sponsored by the Evesham Township Police Department and a fund-raising event that was held in the township in early March. The ride is held over several days and sees hundreds of bike riders travel from New York City to Washington D.C.

The first ride was held in 1997, representatives reported. The last ride in 2010 saw the complete restoration of the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial and Museum. Representatives reported that the $1.1 million project included the re-engraving, coating and sealing of the near 19,000 names on the memorial.

The memorial and museum are both located in Washington, D.C.
