One fatality in Haddonfield house fire

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

According to Fire Chief Joe Riggs, a house fire on the 800 block of Edge Park Drive took the life of an elderly man Tuesday afternoon. Haddon Fire Co. №1, Cherry Hill, Haddon Heights, and Westmont Fire Company responded to the scene.

The fire spread quickly through the single family home. Upon arrival at 2:53 p.m., firefighters encountered heavy smoke throughout the entire first floor of the house. The fire was quickly extinguished with minimal fire damage to the home.

Riggs reported that Frank Berry, 89, was found unconscious in the back bedroom and declared deceased at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Camden County Fire Marshals office.

The 89-year-old resident was taking some form of oxygen, Police Chief John Banning reported last night. Berry’s daughter called 911 and alerted the local authorities about the fire, he said.
