Town basketball wrap-up for Saturday, Feb. 19

By DAVE LARKIN

Here is the complete wrap up of boys and girls town basketball from Saturday, Feb. 19.

Some close games highlighted this week’s boy’s action. The Magic edged the Heat 32–30, in a contest that saw neither team lead by more than four points. Danny Fleming’s 20 points led the Magic and Augie Martinez added 12.

Christian Esgro paced the Heat with 12 points from long range, while teammate Sammy Pierznik’s all around game kept the Heat in contention until the end.

In another nail-biter, the Spurs held on for a 28–25 win over the Bulls.

Jack Ballard guided the Spurs attack and contributed eight points. Will Ciemny, Kyle Noone, Kurt Wolff and Sam Tichansky clamped down on defense to stave off an undermanned Bulls squad for the win.

The Bulls stayed in the game with aggressive defense, led by Tao Luppinetti, Joe DeSimone, Colin Malcarney and Harry Rohlfing. Jimmy Kane and Lewis Evans paced the offense, but coudn’t pull out the victory.

The Lakers remained undefeated in an offensive showcase, beating the Suns 58–39.

Drew Gavranich scored 30 points and Brian Pelose added 18, both season highs for the Lakers. Max Pollack added six points and stellar defense.

For the Suns, Connor MacNeill and JJ Foley scored 12 points each and John Foley had a monster rebounding effort.

Finally, the Sixers crept closer to second place with a 28–8 shellacking of the Celtics.

Drew Ragone and Max Green flawlessly ran the point for the Sixers, while Eddie Rysz’ hustle and defense provided an early spark for the Sixers team victory over the Celtics.

Max Norton led the Celtics in scoring and Alex Gilbert and Damien DelDuco grabbed some key rebounds in the loss.

For the girls, Stanford rallied to defeat UConn 23–20.

Jaime McCormick steadied the Stanford offense while chipping in nine points and Kelly Camperson added eight points and eight rebounds for the Lady Cardinal.

UConn surged ahead early behind Ashley Campo and Annie Skiles.

Despite monster efforts from Abbie Metzler and Sarah Bersani, the Lady Huskies ran out of gas, as a late basket by Delaney Humes sealed the Stanford victory.
