Snow cleanup going well

By ROBERT LINNEHAN

When residents woke up in the morning, they found most of the streets in Haddonfield plowed, as the third snowstorm in less than two weeks struck South Jersey last night. About six inches of snow fell on the streets of Haddonfield overnight.

Currently the streets are well maintained, Borough Administrator Sharon McCullough said, as five trucks are roaming Haddonfield and plowing at regular intervals. It’s been quiet, she said, and there haven’t been any car accidents to report so far.

Trash and recycling pickups are going on as scheduled.

McCullough said department of public works employees pre-treated the roadways yesterday afternoon with salt and the night crew reported to work at 7 p.m.

Luckily the storm hit mostly during the night so the crews were able to clear off the streets before the morning commute, McCullough said.

“The roads are in pretty good shape. There’s still going to be some snow on the roads because the plows don’t go down to the bed of the road, there’s about an inch of the plow from the bottom of the roadway,” she said. “After we’ve plowed everything we go back around and salt. The traffic and the sun will generally eliminate most of the snow that we do leave on there.”

Bill Getzinger, owner of Westmont Ace Hardware, said shoppers have been flocking into the store since yesterday to stock up on salt, shovels, snow blowers and even sleds to combat the storm.

The store is still well stocked with supply trucks coming in every week, he said. Salt is never a problem because the store supplies its own salt from local producers.

“We’ve seen a lot of spikes in business these past two weeks,” Getzinger said in reference to the storms. “We’re sitting pretty in here and have everything people want.”

Residents who notice slippery spots or severe ice patches on their streets should contact the public works department at 429–0183 or the police department at 429–3000.

All store owners, landlords, property owners and tenants of business in the borough have 18 hours after a snowstorm to clear off their walkways, according to borough ordinance.
