Seven file for primary election

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Marlton Telegram

Seven Evesham residents have submitted their names to run in the primary election in hopes of winning a spot on the ballot this November.

All seven candidates are competing for a chance to run in the general election for three seats opening on the Evesham’s five-member Council.

Mayor Randy Brown, Councilman John McKenna and Councilwoman Debbie Hackman are all seeing their terms expire. Brown and Hackman have both submitted their petitions to run in the primary, but McKenna has publicly stated that he will not run for re-election.

Because township voters elected to become part of the general election process last spring, current Council members will see their terms shortened by six months. New members will take their spots on Council in January as opposed to July, when the township typically reorganizes.

In the primary, Brown will compete to be the Republican candidate for mayor as will resident Pat Haynes. It is the only contested race in the primary.

Richard Soboleski is running for a spot on the Democratic ticket for mayor.

Hackman is vying to run as a Republican candidate for Council, as is resident Steven Zeuli. Residents Sharyn Pertnoy-Schmidt and Malorie Malecki are hoping to be placed on the general election ballot as Democratic candidates for Council.

The primary election is scheduled for June 8.

Residents wishing to vote in the primary election must be registered to vote by May 18. A registered voter currently not affiliated with a political party is allowed to declare their party affiliation up to and including the day of the primary.

Information about voting in Evesham may be obtained through the township clerk’s office at (856) 983–2900 ext.2004. Information is also available on the township clerk’s Web site, www.evesham-nj.gov/clerk.htm.
