Something sweet for seniors

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Marlton Telegram

Senior citizens throughout the Marlton community are invited to partake in an afternoon of singing, prizes, desserts and conversation with Evesham public school students during the school district’s upcoming Senior Citizen Dessert Theater.

The district’s public information officer, Charlene Webster, said the event is held for senior citizens every year as part of the district’s community service curriculum.

Seniors are invited to Marlton Middle School where three groups from district schools will be performing musical, choral and orchestra acts. This year, Webster said the three groups are scheduled to perform for about 15 to 20 minutes each.

While students perform, seniors will be offered a selection of desserts made and donated by district employees, school PTAs and parents.

Marlton Middle School Principal, Gary Hoffman, said students in the school’s family and consumer science classes will also make desserts that will be serve to the senior citizens.

Students in the Renaissance Club and on the Marlton Middle School Student Council will assist in serving dessert to the seniors and will also them to their seats and take some time to socialize with their guests.

“Students will be helping to serve the seniors and to get them anything that they need,” Webster said.

Prizes and giveaways, which have been donated to the district, will be given out during the event as well.

“We give each senior citizen a ticket and, in between the group performances, we raffle off different prizes,” Webster said.

Hoffman said the giveaways come from donations from local businesses and school PTAs. In addition, students in the family consumer science classes have put together gift baskets for seniors, which will be given away during the event.

Hoffman said the event is a good way to teach students about community service as well as bridge the gap between generations.

“The seniors love the giveaways, they love the desserts, they love the opportunity to see the children sing,” Hoffman said. “It’s just very, very nice. Our kids get a lot of it because they enjoy their time with the seniors as well.”

This year’s Senior Citizen Dessert Theater is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Marlton Middle School, which is located at 150 Tomlinson Mill Rd.

Admission to this event is free and all local senior citizens are welcome and encouraged to attend. Those interested in attending are asked to R.S.V.P with Webster at 983–1800 ext. 5030.
