District reveals budget

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Marlton Telegram

Last week, the Evesham Township School District Board of Education passed a $68.9 million tentative 2010–11 school budget that includes cuts to staffing and school programming while raising taxes for the average homeowner.

In putting together the budget, officials for the K-8 district said they were faced with a $4.4 million shortfall, mostly caused by a $3.6 million reduction in state aid under the 2010–11 budget. The district was also dealing with a loss of revenue of about $800,000.

The budget includes about $2.8 million in reductions, which include the loss of the equivalent of 27.5 full-time positions and reductions in appropriations for supplies in several departments. The budget also proposes the elimination of all after-school activities, including clubs and sports.

The budget calls for a tax increase of 4 cents, which means a homeowner in the average assessed home of $277,100 will see an annual increase of $111.03 in their tax bills.
