Through the determination of several key community members, Cherokee High School will have a new multi-purpose synthetic turf field at Cherokee’s Foltz Stadium come Labor Day, according to local officials.
A ceremony to kick off construction of the field took place last week at the stadium, where members of the Cherokee Champions, Marlton Recreation Council and The Evesham Celebrations Foundation — all of the groups that gathered funds for the field — put shovels in the ground to mark the project’s success.
Joseph and Iva Samost, the largest donors to the project, were also present last week. The Samosts donated $108,000 of their money toward the turf field.
Joseph Samost said he donated that amount of money because he only works in multiples of 18. The number 18, in Hebrew tradition, symbolizes life, he said.
Mayor Randy Brown, a member of Cherokee Champions, said the field would be named “The Joseph and Iva Samost Foundation Field“ after the Samosts who are longtime residents and business owners.
“You’ve been a part of our community for years,” Brown said. “I heartfully say thank you.”
